My hubby and I spent our honeymoon days at Boracay Island years ago. That time, we promised to ourselves that we would definitely visit the island again together with our kids since we found the place exceptionally magnificent, a total paradise. That promised was realized two weeks ago when my father-in-law treated the whole family for a summer vacation there. I was so excited weeks prior to that but unfortunately, that excitement was not justified when I arrived there. The place is entirely different since my last visit. The island is now packed, crowded and congested. There are a lot of tourists, locales and foreigners alike. But what upset me most is that a lot of establishments have emerged like mushrooms and more still undergoing construction making the island more congested.

What's more, the hotel that we booked online was totally disappointing as well. We were fooled because they placed a different picture online. We cancelled the booking and looked for other hotels. Luckily, there was a vacant apartelle that suited all of us. It was rather expensive but it left us no choice as is it the peak season. Since, the ride from Iloilo to Boracay took us 5 hours, and more tiring hours spent looking for a decent hotel, it left us tired and haggard by night time. We slept early but much to our dismay, by the middle of the night there was power outage. Normally for hotel owners, in times like this, generators should be up and running to satisfy clients. I don’t know what got into the owner’s mind that he doesn’t want to turn on the generator. There is nothing we can do, we can’t sleep due to the humidity. There is less breeze. No air conditioner. No electric fan. We were wide awake till the wee hours of the morning taking turns fanning the kids until the power came back. That was when we were able to sleep. But that did not end our dismay, during the day, after taking a dip in the beach, in the middle of taking a shower, water supply ran out. That problem continued for the rest of our stay there. It’s indeed outrageous. But of course, we didn’t sulk, we took it as it is and still tried our very best to enjoy our stay there. The powder-fine white sands are still awesome though the beach is rather mucky. We absorbed the intense heat of the sun, the loveliness of the beach and the coolness of the water.

The breeze, the coconut trees, the cleanliness of the beach and the open area surrounding Boracay which added to grandeur of the once paradise-like island are definitely missing. That is why for me and for small-time people like me, who stays at cheap hotel and doesn't have abundant funds to stay in Shangri-la and other expensive hotels, Boracay is a paradise... no more.
